How these pages are checked
- Identity from PubChem. A single molecule's CAS number must appear on its own PubChem compound record, and its formula and molecular weight are taken from that record. A natural material's CAS number must appear on a PubChem substance record that names the material. Where neither check passes, no number is shown.
- IFRA from the IFRA library. Pages say whether a Standard covers a material, and which one; they never quote a limit, because limits depend on the product category.
- Judgement is labelled. Odour, family, pyramid position and typical use are the RUŌOD Lab team's descriptions. Perfumers disagree about them, and suppliers' qualities differ.
- No invented figures. Physical constants, prices and usage levels are left out rather than estimated.

Questions about the encyclopedia
Where does the information come from?
Identity is checked, not typed in: every CAS number, molecular formula and molecular weight on these pages comes from PubChem, and a CAS number is shown only when PubChem's own record lists it for that material. IFRA statements come from the IFRA Standards Library. Odour descriptions, uses and classifications are written by the RUŌOD Lab team and are judgement, not measurement.
Why are there no IFRA limits or usage levels?
IFRA limits depend on the product category and change with each amendment, so a single number on a page would be wrong for most readers. Each page says whether a Standard covers the material and links to the IFRA library; the Standard itself has the limits. Usage levels depend on the formula and are not given as fixed figures.
How are materials classified?
Each material has a type (aroma chemical, essential oil, absolute and so on), an origin, a primary and secondary odour family and a position in the fragrance pyramid. Type and origin describe what the material is; family and pyramid describe how it smells and behaves, which is a matter of convention.
Is this a safety data sheet?
No. These pages are general information for perfumers. Composition, IFRA status and allergen content depend on the supplier and the lot, so use the supplier's safety data sheet, specification and IFRA certificate for the material you hold.
