In short

Vertenex (4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate) is a synthetic ester with a woody, slightly floral orris-like note.

What Vertenex smells like

Vertenex (4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate; Firmenich sells it as Lorysia) is a sweet woody material with a soft, powdery orris-floral character. Arctander, cited by suppliers, describes a sweet woody odour with a pronounced powdery orris-root effect; others place its warmth between wood and orris with a subtle fruity sweetness. Its isomers differ: the cis form is more intense and floral-powdery, the trans form drier and woodier. An IFF-linked data sheet lists creamy, floral, fruity, piney, soft, strawberry, sweet and woody.

What makes Vertenex distinctive

An inexpensive orris effect: sweet wood with a powdery iris-root lift, which makes it a bridge between woods and delicate florals.

How Vertenex is used

Used as a blender in the heart, bridging woody and floral materials, and very widely in soaps and functional products.

Typical role: blender (smooths the joins between other materials).

How Vertenex differs from similar materials

Orivone
Orivone is a powerful, camphoraceous, earthy orris-wood; Vertenex is softer and sweeter, with a powdery floral orris.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance

Hazard classification of the neat substance, as PubChem summarises it, read 26 October 2026. Companies notifying the ECHA C&L Inventory classify it (2,617 reports): H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction (80.3% of reports); H411 toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (20.9% of reports). 1 of the reports find it does not meet the hazard criteria. A skin sensitiser classification concerns handling the neat material and the dose in a finished product; the IFRA Standards, where they apply, set the limits. Unless it is harmonised, this is the notifiers' own classification, not a binding one.
