About RUŌOD Lab
A perfume formulation and laboratory-management application, and the thinking behind the way it works.
RUŌOD and RUŌOD Lab
RUŌOD is the broader brand. RUŌOD Lab is the innovation and experimentation space within the RUŌOD ecosystem: where we build, explore and refine digital products, technologies and experiences with a focus on thoughtful design, reliable engineering and meaningful user experiences.
From early concepts to production-ready systems, RUŌOD Lab is a space to experiment with emerging technologies, test new ideas, and turn ambitious concepts into practical solutions. Our approach is simple: build with purpose, experiment with precision, and continuously improve.
The RUŌOD Lab application is the first product of that work to be published under the Lab name, and this site is its official product page. The main RUŌOD site is at ruood.com.
What the application is
RUŌOD Lab is an Android application for people who formulate perfume. It holds three things and the relationships between them:
- a raw-material library — what you have, where it came from, what it cost, what it is, and what it is restricted to;
- formulas built from those materials, each entry carrying a weight and a dilution;
- notes — the reasoning, the trials and the things you will otherwise forget.
Around them sit the parts that make a library workable at size: search, reports over the whole collection, import and export, an app-wide undo history, and backup you control.
Why it was built
Formulation is arithmetic with consequences. A material entered at 10% dilution contributes a tenth of its weight to the smell of the thing and all of its weight to the mass of it, and those two facts lead to different percentages that are routinely confused for one another. When the confusion lives in a spreadsheet, it is invisible until a batch is wrong.
RUŌOD Lab was built so that distinction is made once, in one place, and shown honestly everywhere. Formula percentage, absolute percentage and relative percentage are three separate figures in the application, and it is relative percentage — the olfactory contribution — that an IFRA limit is checked against, because that is the question the limit is asking.
The principles it is built on
One source for every number
A single calculation engine produces every figure. The formula editor, the scaling screen, the status bar, the reports and the exported PDF all read it rather than each computing their own. That is what makes it impossible for a printed total to disagree with the one you were looking at when you printed it.
Derive, do not store
Counts, usage statistics, duplicate tallies and report figures are worked out from your records each time they are needed, and written nowhere. A stored number is a number that can be wrong later: it goes stale the moment a formula is edited, and nothing would correct it. Deriving costs a little work and cannot lie.
An empty value is not a zero
A material with no price recorded is not one that costs nothing; a material with no IFRA limit recorded is not one that is unrestricted. The application keeps "not recorded" distinct from "recorded as zero" throughout — in sorting, in reports and in the safety checks. Every figure with a denominator states it, and every report says what it left out.
Your data is yours, and on your device
The application is offline-first. There is no RUŌOD account, no server holding your library, and no synchronisation running in the background. What leaves your device leaves it because you exported it or backed it up. The Privacy Policy sets out precisely what is stored, where, and what is sent anywhere.
Get your work out again
A formulation library is years of work, and software should never be the thing that traps it. Materials, formulas and collections export as PDF, CSV, Excel or JSON, and a complete backup carries every record whole — including the pictures — so it can be restored on another device.
What it deliberately is not
Being clear about this is part of the product:
- It is not a cloud service. There is backup, which you start, and there is no synchronisation.
- It is not collaborative. There are no shared documents, comments or multiple editors. Sharing is exporting.
- It does not generate formulas. There is no AI, and no suggestion engine. The judgement is yours; the arithmetic is the application's.
- It is not a regulatory authority. It checks the IFRA limits you have recorded against your formulas. It does not ship the standards and is not a substitute for the current published standards or your own assessment.
- It is not a web application. This site is the product page; the application runs on Android.
Availability
RUŌOD Lab is an Android application, currently at version 1.0.0. It is not yet listed on Google Play. This page will carry the listing when it is published — and until then, no download link on this site points anywhere, because there is nowhere honest for it to point.
If you would like to be told when it is available, write to info@ruood.com.
