In short
Methoxymelonal is 6-methoxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal, an aliphatic aldehyde with a watery, melon-like and ozonic odour. It is softer and more floral than Melonal.
What Methoxymelonal smells like
Methoxy melonal (6-methoxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal, sold as Aquaflor) is better described as ozonic and watery than as melon. Bedoukian's description is strong, diffusive, ozonic, muguet-like, watery and marine, with a hint of fruit; another supplier lists floral, fruity, citrus, melon and green. Few independent descriptions exist, and it is often confused with Melonal, so its profile rests on a small number of supplier entries.

What makes Methoxymelonal distinctive
Despite its name it is an ozonic floral rather than a melon: watery, marine and lily-of-the-valley-like, with fruit only in the background — the opposite balance to Melonal.
Where the descriptions disagree: One supplier lists melon and citrus among its notes; Bedoukian names only a hint of fruit.
How Methoxymelonal is used
Used for diffusive watery, ozonic and fresh floral effects in aquatic and fresh compositions.
Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).
How Methoxymelonal differs from similar materials
- Melonal
- Melonal is clearly green melon and cucumber; methoxy melonal is ozonic, watery and muguet-like, with only a hint of fruit.
- Floralozone
- Floralozone is a neutral fresh-air and ocean-breeze note; methoxy melonal is more distinctly floral, muguet-like and watery.
Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance
Hazard classification of the neat substance, as PubChem summarises it, read 26 October 2026. Companies notifying the ECHA C&L Inventory classify it (1,453 reports): H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction (96.4% of reports). 53 of the reports find it does not meet the hazard criteria. A skin sensitiser classification concerns handling the neat material and the dose in a finished product; the IFRA Standards, where they apply, set the limits. Unless it is harmonised, this is the notifiers' own classification, not a binding one.
