In short

Clary sage absolute is extracted from Salvia sclarea. It is rich in sclareol and has a warm, ambery and tobacco-like odour quite unlike the fresher oil.

What Clary Sage Absolute smells like

Clary sage absolute is richer, denser and more tobacco-like than the oil. A supplier describes an extremely rich, delicately balsamic-sweet but somewhat bitter-herbaceous odour of great tenacity, drying down softer, slightly bitter and tobacco-like; a glossary says it pushes further into tobacco, with a balsamic edge the oil lacks. A perfumer uses it to boost oakmoss and tobacco for its dense, woody-mossy quality.

What makes Clary Sage Absolute distinctive

The tobacco side of clary sage — dense, balsamic and bitter-sweet, closer to amber and tobacco leaf than to the floral-tea oil.

How Clary Sage Absolute is used

Used in tobacco, chypre, ambery and leather compositions, and to support oakmoss and tobacco notes.

Typical role: fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes); modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Clary Sage Absolute differs from similar materials

Clary Sage Oil
A glossary describes the oil as lighter, floral and tea-like; the absolute is richer, denser and more tobacco-like, with a balsamic edge. (compared directly by a cited source)

An asterisk marks a difference that a cited source states directly. The others compare the published descriptions of each material. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.
