In short

Iralia Total is a Firmenich methyl ionone with a powdery violet-orris character over a warm woody veil. It is a sturdier, woodier sister of Iralia.

What Iralia Total smells like

Fraterworks describes Iralia Total as smelling like a vintage face-powder compact — rich violet and orris in a warm woody veil — with a creamy floral heart and a subtle raspberry sweetness in the drydown, over 200 hours on the strip; compared with Iralia, the more refined and purely floral version, it is woodier, more stable in difficult bases and more substantive on fabric. Firmenich, its maker, calls Iralia Total the most floral and rich of its methyl ionone qualities, with a strong orris and violet character, a slight fruity note, and a little more wood than Iralia.

What makes Iralia Total distinctive

A vintage face-powder violet and orris in a woody veil, woodier and more stable than Iralia.

How Iralia Total is used

Used as a violet-orris heart, at high levels as a structural material, and with Hedione, vetiver, salicylates and damascones.

Typical role: backbone (used in large proportions as a structural material of an accord).

How Iralia Total differs from similar materials

Orris Givco
Orris Givco is a base made to replace orris absolute; Iralia Total is a single methyl ionone quality, richer in violet.
Methyl Beta Ionone
Methyl beta ionone is drier, with leather and tobacco; Iralia Total is more floral and violet.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Firmenich's Iralia shares its CAS number but is tuned differently; the two are separate products.

No CAS number is shown. The identity of Iralia Total is taken from documentation by Firmenich, Fraterworks; it is a mixture of methyl ionone isomers sold under the generic methyl-ionone CAS number, which PubChem attaches to a single isomer and which Firmenich's Iralia shares, so it is not published as this material's verified number. Without a verified number there is no formula, molecular weight or structure drawing either.
