In short

Orris butter is the concrete obtained by steam distillation of aged orris (iris) rhizomes. It is waxy at room temperature because of its myristic acid, and it is among the most expensive perfumery materials.

What Orris Butter (Orris Concrete) smells like

Orris butter (orris concrete), the waxy distillate of long-aged iris rhizomes, is woody and fatty-oily yet distinctly violet-like: sweet, floral, warm and tenacious with a fruity undertone. Suppliers describe a complex violet-powdery aroma with woody and earthy undertones and a buttery-carrot nuance. Its violet character comes from irones, which develop only during years of storage; irone-rich grades are smoother, more floral and more buttery. A perfumery writer compares it to crunchy peanut butter, with a bitterness that irone-only materials smooth out.

What makes Orris Butter (Orris Concrete) distinctive

Root and butter as well as violet: the earthy, fatty, carrot-like body around the irones' powder is what no synthetic quite reproduces.

How Orris Butter (Orris Concrete) is used

Used as a precious base note and fixative in iris, powdery and fine floral compositions; it shows its full strength in the drydown.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend); fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes).

How Orris Butter (Orris Concrete) differs from similar materials

alpha-Irone
Alpha-irone is the orris powder isolated — smoother and cleaner; the butter adds fatty, earthy, carrot-like root notes.
Carrot Seed Oil
A supplier says carrot seed oil, paired with cedarwood, can mimic orris butter's powdery, suede-like character; orris is more violet and buttery. (compared directly by a cited source)
Orris Absolute
Orris absolute is purified from the butter: cleaner, more intensely floral, higher in irones and without the waxes.
Orris Resinoid (Iris germanica)
The germanica resinoid is solvent-extracted rather than distilled: sweeter, with chocolate and berry notes.

An asterisk marks a difference that a cited source states directly. The others compare the published descriptions of each material. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Solid at room temperature; warm gently and dissolve before weighing. The rhizomes are aged for years before processing, which drives the cost.
