In short

Orris resinoid from Iris germanica is solvent-extracted from the roots, mostly in Morocco. It gives a sweet iris-root note like orris powder but more intense, with chocolate facets.

What Orris Resinoid (Iris germanica) smells like

Fraterworks, which sells a Moroccan Iris germanica resinoid made by Mane, lists woody, floral, sweet, berry and fresh, and says it imparts a sweet iris-root note quite similar to orris powder but more intense. Hermitage Oils describes its Moroccan germanica resinoid as orris facets literally drenched in milk-chocolate notes with hints of blond tobacco.

What makes Orris Resinoid (Iris germanica) distinctive

Orris as root and powder, sweetened by chocolate, rather than the cool violet of the butter.

How Orris Resinoid (Iris germanica) is used

Used as an economical orris effect and fixative in powdery, floral, chypre and gourmand accords.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend); fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes).

How Orris Resinoid (Iris germanica) differs from similar materials

Orris Butter (Orris Concrete)
Orris butter is distilled from the aged rhizome and is cool, powdery and violet-like; the germanica resinoid is solvent-extracted, sweeter, with chocolate and berry notes.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Fraterworks lists it under 8002-73-1, the number this encyclopedia gives orris butter, so none is given here. It is sold neat and as 50% dilutions.
