In short

Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain is a Firmenich olibanum resinoid made from pyrogenated (heated) resin. It reproduces the smoke of burning church incense.

What Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain smells like

Fraterworks describes Firmenich's Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain as the odour of sacred smoke: it encapsulates the fullness of the most common incense blends used in church and is the most important extract for replicating it. Vulcain is Firmenich's term for pyrogenation, heating a raw material to create novel olfactory profiles. Firmenich's own listing gives incense, smoky and leathery as its descriptors: the sweet, woody, balsamic olibanum profile with its green, citrusy and peppery hints, given a warmer, leathery character and a longer dry-down by the heating.

What makes Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain distinctive

Frankincense as burned, not as the raw resin.

How Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain is used

Used to replicate burning incense, in liturgical and smoky resin accords.

Typical role: backbone (used in large proportions as a structural material of an accord); fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes).

How Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain differs from similar materials

Frankincense Absolute
Frankincense absolute is the unburned resin as a base note, amber and vanilla; the Vulcain resinoid is frankincense heated, smoky and leathery, the smell of burning incense.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Vulcain is Firmenich's term for pyrogenation, heating a raw material to create new odours. Very viscous, often sold diluted to 50%. No CAS number specific to the pyrogenated resinoid was confirmed.
