In short

Lemon eucalyptus oil is distilled from the leaves of Corymbia citriodora. It is rich in citronellal and smells lemony and fresh rather than camphoraceous.

What Lemon Eucalyptus Oil smells like

Lemon eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus or Corymbia citriodora) has a clean, lemony scent with citronella-like and rosy-green notes, and none of the camphoraceous cineole character of other eucalyptus oils. Suppliers describe a fresh, lemony scent with rosy notes, softer and less cineolic than their other eucalyptus oils. It is dominated by citronellal, typically 70–85%. Its drydown is softer and sweeter, with a balsamic, slightly floral finish.

What makes Lemon Eucalyptus Oil distinctive

It is a eucalyptus with no camphor — almost pure citronellal in a natural oil, lemony and clean rather than medicinal.

How Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is used

Used as a lemony, non-citrus top or heart note, as a source of citronellal for rose reconstructions, and in citrus-floral soaps, detergents and fresh colognes.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Lemon Eucalyptus Oil differs from similar materials

Citronellal
The oil is mostly citronellal; it adds a softer, balsamic-floral drydown to the aldehyde's sharp, linear lemony green.
Citronella Oil (Java)
Citronella is grassier and rosier, with geraniol; lemon eucalyptus is cleaner and more nearly pure citronellal.
Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus globulus is cineole-led and camphoraceous; lemon eucalyptus is citronellal-rich and lemony.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance

Lebermuth's safety data sheet classifies Eucalyptus citriodora oil as a skin sensitiser (Skin Sens. 1, H317), with H227, H315 and H319. Biolandes' sheet names citronellal, at 50–100%, as the component behind its H317 classification. Other suppliers' sheets differ in their other statements.
