In short

Hedione HC (High Cis) is Firmenich's grade of Hedione enriched in the cis isomer that gives Hedione its power and bloom. It is a separate material from regular Hedione.

What Hedione HC smells like

Fraterworks describes Hedione HC (High Cis) as a version of Hedione specially enriched in the favoured cis isomer, which gives Hedione its power, bloom and radiance; yet it finds the high-cis product less radiant than the regular molecule because of its overall makeup, while still valuing its enriching quality and noting a nuance of magnolia blossoms and jasmine. It lists Kharismal Super as a synonym. dsm-firmenich, its maker, describes Hedione HC as a powerful floral note reminiscent of magnolia blossoms, jasmine and citrus in its descriptors, far stronger than classical Hedione because of its high cis content, and showing its character only in neutral conditions (pH 5.5 to 7.0). Hekserij finds it like Hedione — jasmine and magnolia with some vanilla — but more powerful.

What makes Hedione HC distinctive

A cis-enriched Hedione that Fraterworks finds less radiant than the regular grade but valued for its enriching jasmine-magnolia bloom.

Where the descriptions disagree: dsm-firmenich calls Hedione HC far stronger than Hedione, while Fraterworks finds the high-cis product less radiant than the regular molecule because of its overall makeup; strength and radiance may be different things here.

How Hedione HC is used

Used in jasmine, magnolia and transparent floral hearts, often beside regular Hedione and macrocyclic musks.

Typical role: backbone (used in large proportions as a structural material of an accord); blender (smooths the joins between other materials).

How Hedione HC differs from similar materials

Kharismal
Kharismal is IFF's methyl dihydrojasmonate, of a grade its sources do not document; Hedione HC is the documented high-cis grade, described as more powerful and magnolia-like.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Shares its CAS number with Hedione (methyl dihydrojasmonate); the two differ in their ratio of isomers, and formulas list them separately.

No CAS number is shown. The identity of Hedione HC is taken from documentation by Firmenich, Fraterworks; it is a grade of methyl dihydrojasmonate enriched in the cis isomer, sold under the same CAS number as Hedione itself, so that number cannot identify it and is not published for this record. Without a verified number there is no formula, molecular weight or structure drawing either.
