In short

Cypress absolute is a solvent extract of cypress foliage; Biolandes makes it from the twigs left after distilling the oil. It is a deep, woody-green and balsamic material.

What Cypress Absolute smells like

Biolandes obtains its cypress by-absolute by solvent extraction of the spent twigs and branches left after distilling cypress oil. Eden Botanicals describes it as deep, woody-green and balsamic with spicy-jammy top notes and amber, damp earth, moss, hay and tobacco in the dry-down; LVNEA gives green, resinous and ambery with a balsamic undertone and a light smoke and tobacco dry-down.

What makes Cypress Absolute distinctive

Cypress as a base note: balsamic and ambery where the oil is fresh and resinous.

How Cypress Absolute is used

Used in chypre, amber and woody accords for a green, balsamic depth.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend); fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes).

How Cypress Absolute differs from similar materials

Cypress Oil
Cypress oil is the fresh, resinous-coniferous distillate; the absolute, extracted from the spent twigs, is deeper, balsamic and ambery.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Shares its CAS number with cypress oil (8013-86-3), so none is given here.
