In short

Dihydro gamma ionone is a dihydroionone with a refined, warm woody character and a tobacco quality. It occurs in ambergris tincture.

What Dihydro Gamma Ionone smells like

Fraterworks describes dihydro gamma ionone as found naturally in ambergris tincture, to which it contributes a refined tobacco quality; complex, rich and nuanced, less fruity and earthy than dihydro beta ionone and more intense and warm than dihydro alpha ionone, accentuating tea and tobacco qualities with dihydroactinidiolide. The Good Scents Company's own evaluation, at 10% in dipropylene glycol, gives warm, woody, earthy, ambergris, tobacco, amber and violet, and a perfumer on Basenotes describes an elegant ambergris note with wood, smooth tobacco and soft earthy humus.

How Dihydro Gamma Ionone differs from similar materials

Azarbre
Azarbre is honey and orris with dried flowers; dihydro gamma ionone is the tobacco-and-ambergris wood.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance

Hazard classification of the neat substance, as PubChem summarises it, read 26 October 2026. Companies notifying the ECHA C&L Inventory classify it (90 reports): H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction (100% of reports). A skin sensitiser classification concerns handling the neat material and the dose in a finished product; the IFRA Standards, where they apply, set the limits. Unless it is harmonised, this is the notifiers' own classification, not a binding one.
