In short
Tridecene-2-nitrile is an unsaturated aliphatic nitrile with a powerful aldehydic-citrus odour. It gives a stable, clean aldehydic effect in functional products.
What Tridecene-2-nitrile smells like
Tridecene-2-nitrile (sold as Ozonil) is a very strong citrus material of the mandarin type, with an aldehydic, waxy-fatty character. Givaudan places it in the citrus and tangerine family, aldehydic with a hint of fresh coriander, reminiscent of nuances in orange and mandarin oil. Moellhausen's specification describes the neat material as harsh, fatty and aldehydic, with a mandarin note and a sea-breeze nuance emerging only on extreme dilution. A patent on related nitriles implies a metallic secondary note in this older one.
- Leading note
- Mandarin citrus
- Clear facets
- Fatty aldehydic
- Supporting facets
- Sea breeze, in dilution
- Faint facets
- Coriander, metallic
- Character
- Powerful, waxy, fresh, stable
What makes Tridecene-2-nitrile distinctive
A nitrile that behaves like a citrus aldehyde: mandarin and orange-oil nuances with an aldehydic, ozonic freshness, but in a form that is far more stable than the aldehydes in demanding products.
Concentration and dilution
Harsh, fatty and aldehydic neat; only on extreme dilution does the mandarin note with a sea-breeze nuance emerge.
How Tridecene-2-nitrile is used
Used for citrus-aldehydic and fresh, ozonic effects, particularly in functional products where citrus aldehydes would not survive.
Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).
How Tridecene-2-nitrile differs from similar materials
- trans-2-Dodecenal
- trans-2-Dodecenal is green cilantro with mandarin peel; tridecene-2-nitrile is a harsher, fatty mandarin that turns sea-breeze fresh only in high dilution.
Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.
Formulation considerations
Potent; use in small amounts.
