In short
2,6-Nonadienol is the alcohol corresponding to nonadienal, the cucumber aldehyde. It has a green cucumber and violet-leaf odour that is softer and less fatty than the aldehyde.
What 2,6-Nonadienol smells like
2,6-Nonadienol is the alcohol counterpart of nonadienal: green, watery cucumber and melon with a violet-leaf character in dilution. Arctander describes it as extremely powerful and very diffusive, green-vegetable, and only in dilution strikingly reminiscent of cucumber or violet leaf. Bedoukian lists cucumber, melon or fresh leafy, violet-leaf odour in dilution. Givaudan, noting that it occurs in violet leaves and cucumber, describes it as olfactively similar to nonadienal but fruitier and less leafy, and more stable.

What makes 2,6-Nonadienol distinctive
It is the softer, fruitier side of the cucumber note: Givaudan places it beside nonadienal as fruitier and less leafy, and its stability means it works where the aldehyde would not last.
Concentration and dilution
Arctander stresses that only in dilution does its powerful green-vegetable odour become strikingly cucumber or violet leaf; suppliers recommend smelling it at 1% or less.
How 2,6-Nonadienol is used
Used for natural melon-cucumber notes across a wide range of products, for violet-leaf accords, and alongside nonadienal, which it extends into applications where the aldehyde is unstable.
Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).
How 2,6-Nonadienol differs from similar materials
- 2,6-Nonadienal
- Givaudan describes the alcohol as fruitier and less leafy than the aldehyde, and more stable; the aldehyde is the more aggressive, fatty-green cucumber. (compared directly by a cited source)
- cis-6-Nonenol
- cis-6-Nonenol is sweeter honeydew melon with a waxy side; nonadienol is greener, cucumber and violet leaf first.
An asterisk marks a difference that a cited source states directly. The others compare the published descriptions of each material. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.
Formulation considerations
Very powerful; dose from a 0.1% or 1% dilution.
