In short

Galbanum resinoid is the solvent extract of galbanum gum from Ferula gummosa. It is greener-woody and more balsamic than the oil, with less of the oil's piney top.

What Galbanum Resinoid smells like

The Good Scents Company lists galbanum resinoid as rich green, woody, balsamic, dry, green pepper, dark leafy, herbaceous, resinous and earthy. A reference on galbanum explains that the oil has a pine-like top note that is less pronounced in the resinoid, which is more woody-balsamic and conifer-resinous. FAO describes the resinoid as made by extracting the gum with a non-polar solvent, a dark amber viscous liquid with a characteristic balsamic odour.

What makes Galbanum Resinoid distinctive

Galbanum's green, held down by balsam and wood rather than lifted by pine.

How Galbanum Resinoid is used

Used for a lasting green-resinous note in chypres, green florals and fougères.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Galbanum Resinoid differs from similar materials

Pharaone
Pharaone is a sharp galbanum-pineapple green molecule with a metallic edge; galbanum resinoid is the natural green, held down by balsam and wood.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.
