In short

Okoumal is a synthetic woody-amber material with a warm, slightly fruity character.

What Okoumal smells like

Okoumal (Givaudan) brings an attractive and elegant woody-ambery effect, with olfactive notes of amber, wood, tobacco and musk, in Givaudan's listing; it is extremely long-lasting, more than a month on a blotter. The Good Scents Company lists dry, amber, woody, powdery and musk; Fraterworks a dry, sophisticated woody amber with tobacco-leaf undertones, a soft musky vibration and a velvety texture.

What makes Okoumal distinctive

An elegant, velvety woody amber with snuff and a soft musk — very long-lasting.

How Okoumal is used

Used as a long-lasting woody-amber heart in woody, oriental and masculine compositions.

Typical role: fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes).

How Okoumal differs from similar materials

Kephalis
Kephalis is warmer, with a green-herb side; Okoumal is drier and muskier, with snuff and a velvety texture.
Cashmeran
Cashmeran is spicier and fruitier, with pine; Okoumal is drier, with tobacco and amber.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance

Hazard classification of the neat substance, as PubChem summarises it, read 26 October 2026. Companies notifying the ECHA C&L Inventory classify it (1,555 reports): H400 very toxic to aquatic life (100% of reports); H410 very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (100% of reports). Unless it is harmonised, this is the notifiers' own classification, not a binding one.
