In short

Hercolyn D is a deodorised methyl ester of hydrogenated pine rosin. It is almost odourless and is used as a fixative, blender and viscous carrier.

What Hercolyn D smells like

Fraterworks describes Hercolyn D as a high-quality deodorised hydrogenated pine resin, extremely viscous and light amber, virtually odourless, a fixative and blender whose thickness adds body and texture to dilutions, and notes its use with mastic absolute to extend IFRA-compliant oakmoss in reformulations of Mitsouko. dsm-firmenich's own listing calls it almost odourless with subtle ambery undertones, and an excellent fixative with remarkable stability.

What makes Hercolyn D distinctive

Virtually odourless: valued for the body and texture its viscosity gives a dilution, and as a fixative and blender.

How Hercolyn D is used

Used as a fixative and blender, to add body and texture to dilutions, and to extend mossy notes.

Typical role: fixative (slow to evaporate; helps a blend last and holds lighter notes); solvent (dilutes or carries other materials).

How Hercolyn D differs from similar materials

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Caprylic/capric triglyceride is a light, thin oil carrier; Hercolyn D is extremely viscous and gives a dilution body and fixation.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Extremely viscous and light amber in colour. Its commercial supplier has changed over the years; Fraterworks sells it as Firmenich's.
