In short

Mate absolute is a solvent extract of yerba mate leaves. It has a deep, dried, slightly roasted tea character with hay, herbal and tobacco-leaf notes.

What Mate Absolute smells like

Fraterworks describes mate absolute as the warmth of steeped green tea — not bright or grassy but deep, dried and slightly roasted — with hay and herbaceous facets and a tobacco-leaf dryness beneath, and a phenolic undertow that gives it backbone in chypres and mossy structures. Biolandes, which extracts mate leaves itself, describes its 60% absolute as linear brown-tobacco notes with honeyed facets that develop black-tea tones, and Perflavory lists Charabot's and Firmenich's mate absolutes as tobacco, tea and hay, Firmenich's with herbaceous, flowery touches.

What makes Mate Absolute distinctive

Tea that reads dried and roasted rather than fresh.

How Mate Absolute is used

Used in tea accords, fougères, tobacco compositions and chypres.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Mate Absolute differs from similar materials

Bran Absolute
Bran absolute is bready cereal and biscuit; mate is tea-led, dried and roasted, with a phenolic undertow.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Often sold diluted (for example 40% in triethyl citrate). No CAS number specific to the absolute was confirmed.
