What makes Anther distinctive

A green hyacinth note from an ether rather than an aldehyde.

How Anther is used

Used for hyacinth and green-floral effects: The Good Scents Company lists it for fragrance as a fresh, green, metallic hyacinth note, and the powerful rose-hyacinth odour Arctander describes is more pleasant diluted, so it is used in small amounts in hyacinth, lilac and spring-floral accords. JECFA also evaluates it as a flavouring agent.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Anther differs from similar materials

Styrallyl Alcohol
Styrallyl alcohol is a mild, soft floral with hyacinth and gardenia hints; Anther is a fresher, greener and more metallic hyacinth.

Each difference compares the published descriptions of the two materials. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Safety and compliance

Hazard classification of the neat substance, as PubChem summarises it, read 26 October 2026. Companies notifying the ECHA C&L Inventory classify it (1,617 reports): H411 toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (82.8% of reports). 278 of the reports find it does not meet the hazard criteria. Unless it is harmonised, this is the notifiers' own classification, not a binding one.
