In short

Lilytol is Bedoukian's high-cis grade of p-menthan-7-ol, the molecule sold as Mayol, with a fresh, clean magnolia and lily-of-the-valley floral note. Perfumer's Apprentice reports that Bedoukian is discontinuing it.

What Lilytol smells like

Perfumer's Apprentice describes Lilytol as a high-cis version of Mayol giving a clean, enhanced white-floral effect: fresh, floral, magnolia and muguet, clean and grassy. Olfactorian describes a fresh, clean floral with soft magnolia petals and grassy-green facets, a subtle muguet sweetness and a hint of cumin spice.

What makes Lilytol distinctive

Mayol made cleaner and more floral by its higher cis content, as its distributor describes it.

Where the descriptions disagree: Olfactorian lists Mayol among Lilytol's other names; Perfumer's Apprentice distinguishes it as Mayol's high-cis version, which is how this record treats it.

How Lilytol is used

Used for a clean, enhanced white-floral effect in muguet, magnolia and fresh floral accords.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend); blender (smooths the joins between other materials).

How Lilytol differs from similar materials

Mayol
Perfumer's Apprentice calls Lilytol a high-cis version of Mayol with a cleaner, enhanced white-floral effect. (compared directly by a cited source)

An asterisk marks a difference that a cited source states directly. The others compare the published descriptions of each material. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.

Formulation considerations

Shares its CAS number with Mayol and differs from it in isomer ratio; formulas that name it are not read as Mayol. Perfumer's Apprentice reports that Bedoukian is discontinuing it.

No CAS number is shown. The identity of Lilytol is taken from documentation by Perfumer's Apprentice, Olfactorian; Bedoukian's Lilytol is described as a high-cis version of Mayol, cis-p-menthan-7-ol, sold under Mayol's own CAS number; that number cannot tell the two grades apart, so it is not published for this record. Without a verified number there is no formula, molecular weight or structure drawing either.
