In short

Fraistone is a trade name for the propylene glycol ketal of ethyl acetoacetate. It has a fruity, strawberry-apple odour and is a close relative of Fructone.

What Fraistone smells like

Fraistone (IFF) is a tart, fresh, anisic fruity note reminiscent of apple, plum and strawberry, in IFF's description. Fraterworks adds a faint liquorice hint. Beside Fructone, its close relative, it reads brighter, tarter and greener. One user found two samples sold under the same number smelled very different, perhaps because of isomer content.

What makes Fraistone distinctive

The tart, strawberry-leaning ketal — fresher and more anisic than the sweeter, apple-pineapple Fructone.

How Fraistone is used

Used for fresh strawberry, plum and apple effects in fruity compositions.

Typical role: modifier (used in small amounts to change the character of a blend).

How Fraistone differs from similar materials

Fructone
Fructone is sweeter and more apple-pineapple, with a woody-pine base; Fraistone is tarter and more strawberry-plum, with anise. (compared directly by a cited source)
Ethyl Methylphenylglycidate (Aldehyde C-16)
Strawberry aldehyde is a jammy, candy strawberry preserve; Fraistone is fresher and tarter, with apple and plum.

An asterisk marks a difference that a cited source states directly. The others compare the published descriptions of each material. Smell varies with grade, supplier and dilution; compare them side by side on blotters before substituting one for another.
