Stage A learning path
Learn what perfumery is, train your nose, and set up a safe and organized bench. Take the levels in order: each one uses what the last one taught.
Level 1
What perfumery is, how a perfume is structured, the words the trade uses, and a realistic plan for learning it.
8 lessons · Outcome: A smelling journal and a personal learning plan.
Level 2
How smell works, how to evaluate a material properly, and the drills that build recognition, vocabulary and reliability.
8 lessons · Outcome: Documented evaluations of a starter collection of materials.
Level 3
What the materials are, how to read their paperwork, and how to handle, weigh, dilute and store them safely.
8 lessons · Outcome: A safe, organized and documented training library.
Levels 1 and 2 need little beyond a notebook, paper smelling strips and whatever fragrances and materials you already have. Level 3 is where you buy equipment and a small set of materials, and it covers how to do that safely. The lessons name ingredients by what they teach, and none of them requires a particular supplier.
The reading takes a few hours. The training takes as long as your nose does. We suggest short, frequent sessions over weeks rather than finishing in a weekend, because recognizing a material is a skill you build by repetition.
