Design a Wear Test: Study Guide

Read our longevity and sillage guide, then write a full wear test protocol on paper, including the safety review that must happen before anyone wears a sample.

In short

A wear test puts a fragrance on people and records what happens over time. It sits at the end of development because it involves skin exposure. The reference guide describes how to run one. This study guide has you write the protocol on paper, so you know what a real test requires before you would ever run it.

What you will learn

  • Write a wear test protocol
  • Identify what must be true before people wear a sample

Before this lesson: Fixatives: Study Guide and a Test of the Claim

What to look for as you read

  • How the guide fixes the dose and the place of application.
  • How it collects ratings over time.
  • What it says about how much a small test can show.

Practical exercise: Write a wear test protocol

About 40 minutes · You will have: a written protocol covering purpose, participants, dosing, recording and safety gates

Do not run this with a study composition. This is a planning exercise for a checked formula.

  1. State the question: for example, "Is version B noticeably longer lasting than A at 6 hours?"
  2. List the safety gates that must be passed first. Use the safety assessor guide.
  3. Define participants and how they consent, including how to withdraw, and what happens if a reaction occurs.
  4. Fix the dose, place, timing, blinding and rating scale.
  5. Write how you will analyze the result, and what result would change your decision.

You have done this well if another person could run it from your protocol, and the safety gates come first.

Knowledge check

1. What must happen before anyone wears your sample?
Show the answer

Checks against restrictions and an appropriate safety assessment. Wearing involves skin exposure, so the formula must be appropriately assessed first.

2. Why is it important that participants do not know which sample is which?
Show the answer

Expectation changes what people report. Blinding is the main protection against bias.

3. What should be recorded?
Show the answer

Dose, location on the body, time, conditions and how ratings were made. Those details let you interpret and repeat the test.
