Level 10 · Safety, IFRA, Regulatory Compliance and Quality

IFRA Standards: Study Guide

Read our IFRA Standards guide, then look up three real materials and record what each Standard says, with amendment and date, in your own file.

In short

The IFRA Standards are the fragrance industry's self-regulatory rules, prohibiting, restricting or specifying the quality of particular materials. The guide you are about to read explains what they are and how they work. This level treats them as a working tool, so your job here is to learn to find a Standard and to record exactly what you found and when. Nothing in this Academy gives you a limit to copy, because limits change and they depend on the product.

What you will learn

  • Tell a prohibition, a restriction and a specification apart
  • Find a Standard and record its amendment and date
  • Say what IFRA compliance does not establish

Before this lesson: Designing a Fragrance Experiment

What to look for as you read

  • The three types of Standard, and why each exists.
  • The role of the Expert Panel, and how much weight the system's voluntary status carries in practice.
  • What an amendment is, and which one is currently in force.

Practical exercise: Look up three Standards

About 40 minutes · You will have: a dated lookup table for three materials, with the source for each

  1. Choose three materials you use: one you believe is restricted, one you believe is unrestricted, and one natural oil.
  2. Look up each on IFRA's own site, not on a supplier's page or a forum.
  3. For each, record the Standard's type and number, the amendment, your source URL, today's date and what the Standard applies to.
  4. For the natural oil, note whether any constituent you know it holds has a Standard of its own.
  5. Write one sentence on anything you expected but did not find.

You have done this well if someone could follow your table back to each source, and a material with no Standard is recorded as "none found on this date" rather than as "safe".

Knowledge check

1. What is the legal status of the IFRA Standards?
Show the answer

A self-regulatory industry system, which contracts and law may separately call on. They are voluntary as such, though in practice a customer or contract may require them. Law is a separate question.

2. Which of these is not a type of IFRA Standard?
Show the answer

A recommended retail price. Standards prohibit, restrict or set specifications. Price has no place in them.

3. A formula meets the IFRA Standards. Does that make the product legal to sell?
Show the answer

No, market law and a safety assessment are separate. Each market sets its own requirements, as later lessons in this level show.
