In short
The reference guide lists the mistakes most formulators make. Reading a list is easy, and it is much harder to see which ones are yours. This study guide turns the list into an audit of the five compositions you have just made.
What you will learn
- Audit your own work against a list of common mistakes
- Identify your own most repeated mistake
Before this lesson: The Revision Loop: Study Guide
What to look for as you read
- Which mistakes are about arithmetic, and which are about composition or evaluation.
- Which you recognize immediately, and which you doubt apply to you. Check those especially.
Practical exercise: Audit five compositions
- Make a table: your five compositions across the top, and the guide's mistakes down the side.
- Mark each from your records, not from memory. Where the record does not show, mark that too.
- Count the marks by row. Identify the mistake you repeat most.
- Write one rule for your next formula that would prevent it.
You have done this well if your rule is specific enough to break. "Be careful" does not count. "No more than 15 lines in a first draft" does.
