Cashmeran in Perfumery: The Musky-Woody Blender

Cashmeran (DPMI) for formulators: its musky, woody, spicy odor, what it does in a formula, a comparison exercise, handling, dosage, IFRA status and records.

Short answer

Cashmeran is a trade name for a synthetic aroma chemical (chemically a pentamethyl-hexahydro-indanone, often abbreviated DPMI) with a soft, warm, diffusive smell that is musky, woody, slightly spicy and powdery — perfumers describe it as velvety, like the fabric it was named after. It sits between the musks and the woods, lifts and blurs accords, gives a "skin" warmth in the drydown and is used from traces up to large proportions in some modern compositions. Treat it as a strong, long-lasting material: weigh it from a dilution in trials, check its IFRA status, and record it by its chemical identity as well as its trade name.

What it smells like

Cashmeran has no single dominant facet, which is what makes it useful. On a blotter it reads as:

  • musky — soft and clean, close to the skin musks;
  • woody — dry, slightly pine-like and earthy;
  • spicy-powdery — a faint, warm, almost resinous sweetness;
  • diffusive — it carries well and lingers for a long time.

Some people smell it strongly and others hardly at all, as with several musks; evaluate it with more than one nose (odor threshold).

What it does in a formula

  • Blurs joins. A few percent smooths transitions between floral, woody and musky parts, much as Hedione does for florals (Hedione).
  • Adds a skin-like warmth to musky and "clean" drydowns, alongside the musks and Ambroxide (musks, Ambroxide).
  • Bridges woods and ambers, sitting comfortably with Iso E Super, cedar and patchouli (Iso E Super, woody notes).
  • Supports overdose structures, where a few materials at high levels carry the perfume (the overdose technique).

A comparison exercise

Make 10% dilutions in ethanol of Cashmeran, Iso E Super, Ambroxide, a macrocyclic musk and Hedione. Smell them side by side at once, after two hours and the next day. Then make a simple woody-musky base of 40 parts Iso E Super, 30 parts musk, 20 parts cedarwood and 10 parts Hedione (100 parts), and a second version with 10 parts of the Iso E Super replaced by Cashmeran. The difference — more warmth, more blur, more "fabric" — is the clearest way to learn what the material does.

Handling and dosage

  • It is potent and long-lasting; in trials, weigh it as a 10% dilution so small changes are measurable (diluting aroma chemicals).
  • Doses range widely by style: traces for a hint of warmth, a few percent as a blender, more in compositions built around it. Adjust by evaluation after the trial has rested, not by a rule.
  • It can dominate a drydown if overdosed; watch it in light, transparent accords.

Restrictions and records

  • IFRA. Check whether an IFRA Standard applies to it and at what level for your product category, and keep the supplier's certificate (how to check IFRA limits).
  • Labeling. It is not among the EU's named fragrance allergens, but confirm with the supplier's allergen statement for the grade you buy.
  • Identity. Record the trade name, the chemical name from the supplier's documents and its CAS number on the material record, so that an equivalent material from another supplier can be compared on paper as well as by smell (material names and CAS numbers).

Frequently asked questions

Is Cashmeran a musk?

It is usually grouped with the musky-woody materials. It has a musky facet but also clear woody and spicy sides, so it is better thought of as a bridge.

What can replace Cashmeran?

No single material reproduces it. Combinations of a woody-ambery material, a soft musk and a touch of a powdery note come close in an accord; test side by side.

Why can't I smell Cashmeran on a blotter?

Some people are less sensitive to it, and its effect is clearer in an accord than alone. Try the comparison exercise above.
