Longevity is how long a perfume remains noticeable on your skin. Projection is how far it radiates from you while you are standing still — whether someone at arm’s length can smell it. Sillage, a French word for the wake of a boat, is the trail it leaves in the air as you move. The three are related but separate: a perfume can last all day while staying close to the skin, or project boldly for an hour and then fade.

Longevity

Longevity is the simplest of the three: the number of hours a perfume stays perceptible. It depends mostly on:

  • Composition. Base materials — woods, resins, musks, amber, vanilla — evaporate slowly; citrus and light herbs quickly.
  • Concentration. More concentrate usually means a longer life. See Perfume Concentrations Explained.
  • Skin and conditions. Heat, wind and dry skin shorten it; fabric and cool air lengthen it.

What you can do about it is collected in How to Make Perfume Last Longer.

Projection

Projection describes the radius of a perfume while you are still — sometimes called its "scent bubble". A perfume with strong projection can be noticed across a room; one with soft projection only by someone close to you.

Projection is usually strongest in the first hour, when the most volatile materials are evaporating fastest, and declines as the perfume reaches its dry down. Some materials are particularly diffusive and give a fragrance lift and radiance even in small amounts.

Sillage

Sillage (pronounced roughly see-yahzh) is the trail a perfume leaves behind you — the way a fragrance lingers in a corridor after you have walked through it. It is related to projection, but not the same: a fragrance can project moderately and still leave a noticeable wake, especially in still air.

Sillage is often treated as a compliment, but it is also a responsibility. A perfume with a heavy trail can be welcome at an evening party and overwhelming in a lift or a shared office. See Wearing Perfume With Intention.

Longevity is time. Projection is distance. Sillage is memory — what is left after you have gone.

How the three combine

Some common combinations:

  • Long-lasting, close to the skin: many musky and woody fragrances, and many perfume oils. Noticed by you and those near you for hours. See What Is a Skin Scent?.
  • Bold, short-lived: many fresh citrus fragrances. A vivid first hour, then quiet.
  • Bold and long-lasting: many rich ambers, gourmands and ouds. A little goes a long way.
  • Gentle all round: light colognes and body mists, meant to be reapplied.

None of these is better in itself; they suit different people and places.

Why you can’t judge your own

Your nose adapts to a constant smell within minutes, so you are the worst judge of your own projection and sillage. A perfume that seems to have vanished may still be clearly noticeable to others. See Why Can’t I Smell My Own Perfume?. If you want to know how far yours carries, ask someone you trust.

What "beast mode" and "performance" mean

In online fragrance discussion, a perfume’s performance usually means its longevity and projection together, and "beast mode" describes one with very strong, long-lasting projection. These are informal terms. They describe one quality among many, and strong performance is not the same as a perfume being good or suited to everyday wear.

Common questions

Is strong sillage good or bad?

Neither. It depends on where you are and who is near you. A modest sillage is usually wiser in close quarters.

Does eau de parfum always project more than eau de toilette?

No. Concentration affects richness and longevity more reliably than projection. See Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette.

How is perfume performance measured?

Informally, by wearing a fragrance and noting how long it stays noticeable and how far others notice it. Perfumers and brands use structured wear tests; RUŌOD Lab describes one in How to Test Perfume Longevity, Projection and Sillage.
