A refillable perfume comes in a bottle designed to be reused: you top it up from a larger refill instead of buying a new bottle each time. There are three main systems — bottles whose sprayer unscrews so you can pour in perfume, bottles refilled through the spray nozzle from a matching refill, and cartridge or case systems where a refill slots into an outer bottle. Refills often cost less per millilitre than a new bottle and reduce packaging, but they work only with the system they were made for. Refill carefully, keep everything clean, and store the refill as you would any perfume.

Why refills exist

Many perfume bottles are crimped: the sprayer is sealed permanently onto the glass, so the bottle cannot be opened without damage. That protects the perfume from air and leaks, but means each bottle is used once. Refillable designs keep the protection while letting you reuse the bottle, which many people value for cost and for reducing waste. How long perfume keeps is discussed in Does Perfume Expire?.

The main systems

Screw-off sprayer

The sprayer unscrews from a threaded neck. You remove it, pour in perfume from a refill bottle (often with a funnel or a spout), and screw it back. Simple, but it exposes the perfume to air and needs a steady hand.

Refill through the nozzle

The refill has a small valve or nozzle that fits the bottle’s sprayer. You press the two together and perfume flows in without opening anything. It is clean and keeps air out, but only works with matching designs.

Cartridges and cases

A small inner bottle or cartridge slides into a decorative outer case. When it runs out, you replace the inner part and keep the case.

A refill is the same perfume in plainer clothes; the bottle you love stays on the shelf.

Before you buy a refillable perfume

  • Check what refills exist and in which sizes — and whether they are sold where you shop.
  • Check the system matches. A refill for one design rarely fits another.
  • Compare the cost per millilitre of the refill with the bottle. See What Size Perfume Bottle Should You Buy?.
  • Consider whether you will use a large refill while it is at its best.

How to refill without spoiling the perfume

  1. Refill only with the same perfume. Mixing perfumes in one bottle changes both.
  2. Work somewhere clean and calm, away from heat and flames — perfume is flammable.
  3. Use the tools provided — a funnel or adaptor made for the purpose.
  4. Don’t overfill. Leave a little space, especially in screw-top bottles.
  5. Close everything tightly and wipe away spills; perfume can damage some surfaces and finishes.
  6. Store refill and bottle well — cool, dark and closed. See How to Store Perfume.

Can you refill a crimped bottle?

Generally not without damaging it. Prising off a crimped sprayer usually ruins the seal, and the bottle will leak or let air in. If you want to carry some perfume from a crimped bottle, spray-to-spray decanting tools exist; see How to Decant Perfume Into a Travel Atomiser.

Is refillable perfume better for the environment?

Reusing a glass bottle avoids making another, and refills often use less packaging. How much difference that makes depends on the refill’s own packaging and transport, so treat broad claims cautiously. The practical benefits — keeping a bottle you love and often paying less per millilitre — are clearer.

Common questions

Are perfume refills cheaper?

Often, per millilitre, but not always. Compare the prices.

Can I use any refill in my bottle?

Usually not. Refills are made for specific bottles and systems.

Does refilling affect the perfume?

Not if you use the same perfume and keep air and heat out. Mixing old and new perfume is fine if both are in good condition.

Can I refill a bottle with a different perfume?

It is not recommended. Traces of the old perfume will affect the new one.
